Hamish “Gauger” Reid carries a past that once put him on the wrong side of many local sympathies. Formerly an excise man, he knew the law from the enforcement side and earned the suspicion that naturally came with it.
Yet time, experience, and the long education of village life have altered him. Reid has become a more complicated and more sympathetic figure: a man who understands authority, but also its blindness.
His presence in The Last Pint Inn adds an important tension to the cast. He represents both the old pressures brought to bear on Highland lives and the possibility that a person may change without pretending the past never happened.
Visitors may find Reid dry-witted, observant, and a little wary. Trust with him comes slowly, but once earned, it tends to last.
